The National Reading Celebration is RIF's largest visibility and awareness campaign designed to direct public attention to literacy issues and the importance of reading to children. 2003's celebration centered around the theme The Art of Reading.
Kids and families enjoyed a fun-filled day of hands-on workshops, performances, and read-alouds at locations throughout the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Engaging, creative activities encouraged children to read, write, and develop their artistic abilities. RIF also held a free book distribution for all children who participated in activities at the museum.
The events at the Corcoran Gallery of Art centered around the “Public Studio," an unprecedented gathering of great children’s illustrators who demonstrated their talents in public. The artwork the illustrators produced represented favorite books from their childhoods in creative and uniquely personal ways, giving insight into their artistic processes.
